What is a root canal?

In performing a root canal, all of the nerve tissues are removed from each root of the tooth, all the way to the tip of the root. After this is accomplished, a root canal filling is placed. The filling is usually a material called gutta percha.

A root canal is required due to injury to the nerve. The injury may be caused by accidental breakage or decay.
